Cisco Spotlight Series: The need for speed
Despite the growth in networking segments like wireless, IP voice and application networking, what has driven the industry from its earliest days is the basic need to transport ever-growing amounts of data from one point to another.
At Cisco Systems Inc., those efforts fall under the auspices of vice president and general manager John McCool's gigabit switching business unit, which includes midrange and enterprise products such as the Catalyst 4500 and recently updated 6500 switches.
McCool has been a pioneer in Ethernet technology and standards for more than 20 years, and he recently spoke with SearchNetworking.com about the benefits of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, whether old cables can keep up with it and if ATM's time has truly passed.
